College students are being discredited and discouraged by the policies and curricula brought on by the higher education structures. “With each layer of remediation, students become less likely to complete college-level courses and make progress toward a degree or transfer.” (Hern and Brezina p.1) This makes sense as all the listed reasons, not just this one, are relatable to myself and many others. I got placed into lower remediation classes at the start of my college career. Worst feeling as it made me not want to sign up and quit school all together. The higher education structures policies and curricula are too discouraging towards students. If I wanted to drop out, there was definitely more like me.
Just recently the higher education structures began to eliminate the curricula to placement testing. The California Acceleration Project helped to make this happen as its work was to make the higher structures understand the effect of their doings with students placements. It seems that by eliminating these remediation classes, and allowing students to place themselves in the class of their own choice, students are better off with signing up or completing college. Not all schools have adapted to this method of change, but thankfully Mt San Antonio has. Without a change like this, none of this would be here.
